Made in Morocco, towards a new beginning ...

We did it for masks and respirators, why not for tourism and industry? The pandemic is an opportunity or never to reduce dependence on imports, support local supply and make it the engine of sustainable post-coronavirus growth. In crafts, textiles, agrifood, automotive… There is no lack of opportunities and potential. Quality and innovation are the charm assets to retain nationals, attract foreign markets and, why not, achieve our economic miracle.

Amsterdam – A collection highlighting seven decades of Moroccan modern art, its currents and multiple tributaries is exhibited at the Cobra Museum of Modern Art in Amstelveen in the Netherlands, in partnership with the National Museum Foundation (FNM).

The exhibition, which will be open to the public until September 18, is placed under the sign “the other story: Moroccan modernism”. About forty works from the FNM collection are presented there. A first in the Netherlands, which for the occasion welcomes Moroccan artists who have made the trip to discuss the evolution of modern Moroccan art from Morocco's independence in 1956 to the present day.

The collection is made up of major artists of Moroccan painting such as Malika Agueznay, Talal Chaïbia, Mohamed Chabaa, Mohamed Drissi, Maoual Bouchaib, Mohamed Melehi, Farid Belkahia, Abdellah Fakhar, Daouad Aoulad-Sayed, Essaydi Lalla and Abbès Saladi.

"The Moroccan art scene is exceptionally rich, and it is our duty to participate in the dissemination of our art and to make it known in the world," FNM president Mehdi told MAP. Qotbi on the occasion of the opening, Thursday evening, of this exhibition attended by the Moroccan ambassador to the Netherlands, Mohamed Basri, the writer Fouad Laroui, artists and many visitors.

Highlighting the importance of "cultural diplomacy", Mr. Qotbi stressed that the role of the National Museums Foundation is also to "promote Moroccan art and artists beyond our borders".

"This exhibition testifies in this respect to the contribution that the FNM can make to highlight Moroccan painters in the world", he continued, assuring that this work of building bridges between art institutions won't stop there.

Mr. Qotbi recalled that it was not the first that the FNM forged partnerships of this type, a similar exhibition devoted to Moroccan art from independence to the present day having been organized at the Reina Sofia museum in Madrid. "We are also preparing a major exhibition of the common archaeological heritage with Spain on May 24," he said.

For Abdelkader Benali, curator of the exhibition, this event is “a great platform to present to the Dutch public the richness and evolution of modern Moroccan art over time”.

“We are aware of the quality and international notoriety of Moroccan artists, and we aspire to promote Moroccan modern art to the Dutch public, eager for different artistic currents”, he underlined.

And to note that the choice of the participating works was not easy, because of the richness of the Moroccan artistic scene and the talents of which it abounds.

''We have taken care to select paintings and creations by both pioneering artists and others from the new school to show this continuity over time of Moroccan art, whose themes touch on a wide spectrum of influences and inspirations,” he explained.

An observation shared by the director of the Cobra Museum of Modern Art, Stefan van Raay, who said he was impressed by the diversity and richness of Moroccan art and by the cultural contribution of Dutch writers, artists, stylists and directors. Moroccan origin.

''This is where the idea of showing this culture to the Dutch public was born,'' he said, stressing that ''Moroccan art is particularly versatile, fresh, young and ancestral at the same time. . An art that tells stories and a culture that has been able to irrigate with other influences.

As part of the realization of the partnership with the Cobra Museum, the National Museums Foundation will host in 2023 an exhibition entitled ''A Multi-headed Snake'', on loan from the collection of the Cobra Museum which will be exhibited at the Mohammed VI Museum in modern and contemporary art.

On the sidelines of this event, the President of the FNM visited a number of prestigious museums in the Netherlands and spoke with heads of museum institutions about ways to establish and strengthen cooperation and exchanges with the National Foundation of museums.

           So, why Tunisia?

TGS discovered - through market research - that Tunisian farmers and agro-producers face important losses after the harvest of their crops, in some cases reaching post-harvest losses up to 30%! Having recognized this problem, we teamed up with Dutch suppliers of innovative and sustainable solutions for the prevention of infestations, diseases, bacteria, and rottenness in harvested products. Technical solutions are provided in the form of equipment such as a UVC hood (disinfection) or MAP (Modified Atmosphere) Big Bags - in which non-chemical gases can be introduced, such as CO2 or Nitrogen. In addition, we provide solutions for the sorting of harvested crops on the basis of colour, quality and/or measure.

I am representing TGS and its Dutch partners in Tunisia in order to offer these solutions to local parties or foreign companies active in Tunisia. In my daily work, the representation translates into further market research and networking with businesses, universities, and the Ministry of Agriculture in order to introduce our equipment. Even though I have only been here for a few months, it has already positively surprised me how open the government is to provide information and how willing local Tunisian companies are to cooperate with foreign enterprises.

So far I experience Tunisians as being great networkers, which brings me to a great nexus with YEP. As sole representative for TGS in Tunisia, I needed to search for an office space. Afkar, a Local Business Incubator in Tunis, welcomed me with open arms and allowed me to work in their facilities. They are very geared towards creating value through networking. Since the YEP Bureau is looking to increase its activity in the MENA (the Middle East and North Africa) region, we are now looking into possibilities to organize a workshop geared towards Tunisian startups. This is such a great opportunity to connect local Tunisian companies with YEP Programmes and the Netherlands Water Partnership!

Seeing these opportunities arise and connections develop is wonderful. I thoroughly believe the Young Expert Programmes is having and will have a great impact on many different levels. To begin with, Dutch companies (including TGS and its partners) are gaining recognition in an (until recent) unknown region. In addition, this experience is providing the opportunity for YEP to organically connect with local Tunisian organizations and most importantly, the Tunisian agricultural sector is being presented with brand new solutions that can revolutionize their yield after harvest. My long-term vision and hope is to contribute to Tunisian farmers and producers to become more profitable and for food loss to be radically reduced.

both work for Mott MacDonald at the international development services unit of the group. Mott MacDonald is a large-scale consultancy engineering group that operates worldwide. Based in Egypt, they work on implementing water infrastructure projects for the government. Both Anna and Mohamed focus on the two irrigation projects for the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation.

Anna: One of the projects that just started is the Kitchener Drain Depollution Project. The Kitchener Drain is one of the main agricultural drains for irrigation in the Nile Delta passes through three governorates and is 69km in length. The drain has become heavily polluted by domestic and industrial wastewater, uncontrolled solid waste disposal, and residues of fertilizers and pesticides, causing severe environmental, social, and economic harm. The EBRD, EU, EIB, and the Government of Egypt joined forces investing 715 million euros in the cross-sectoral Kitchener Drain Depollution and Rehabilitation Programme. The programme consists of three components, water and sanitation, solid waste, and drain rehabilitation. We are working on the drain rehabilitation component.

Magdy: Next to the water resources projects, we are also providing consultancy services for the sanitation sector in Egypt. Mott MacDonald is leading a consortium that helps the Ministry of Housing, Utilities and Urban Communities and the affiliated water companies in each target governorate of the Sustainable Rural Sanitation Services Programme (SRSSP). The government recognises that water pollution is a threat to the economic development of Egypt and has therefore launched its flagship presidential programme known as the National Rural Sanitation Programme (NRSP).

Ultimately, the objective is to provide access and improved sanitation services to 4,000 unserved rural villages and over 27,000 satellite villages. This will be done by providing new sanitation infrastructure to collect wastewater, proper treatment, and then controlled disposal so that it does no harm to the environment. Although rural, populations are dense enough to justify collecting wastewater through sewer networks and bringing it to a nearby treatment plant. SRSSP has two main priorities. Firstly, it supports the decentralised approach of empowering regional Water Sanitation Centres (WSCs) to develop their own assets and improve their operational, financial, and customer engagement performance. Secondly, it reinforces the presidential commitment, creating a clear incentive for all stakeholders to turn this project into a national success, paving the way for more robust regional utilities, better governance and service delivery.

How is being a Young Expert of added value for you and for Mott MacDonald?

Magdy: Being a Young Expert helped me a lot, professionally and personally. I would like to thank the YEP Programme Bureau for this magnificent opportunity and for the training sessions and coaching. It is a life-changing programme, and I hope that in future, I will be able to continue growing as I was taught by the YEP training. On the personal scale, I have benefited a lot from the extensive two training sessions and periodical meeting with my coach and my mentor. I gained different and valuable perspectives and better communication abilities that widened my horizon and gave me insights into diversity and access to a greater range of talent. I was also able to define and acknowledge my strengths on a personal and the professional level. YEP allowed Mott MacDonald to hire me as a local Young Expert and add more junior talent to their team. It has given me the chance to boost my abilities and for Mott MacDonald to see the potential in me. I will always be grateful for the great opportunity that I was offered and will continue to develop my potential.

Anna: The Young Expert Programme has given Mott MacDonald the possibility to create a long-term post for me in Egypt. I am now almost at the end of my two years in Egypt and I must say it is has been an experience that cannot easily be equated. YEP is like a pressure cooker and you go up a steep learning curve. Of course, I gained many different professional skills, in broad terms it taught me to be independent, flexible, and a better communicator. I have also taking the chance to learn Arabic and I can now move around Cairo like a local.

Magdy: The rural sanitation project we work on, directly contributes to SDG6 “Clean Water and Sanitation” by providing sewage connections and wastewater treatment to around 1 million people in the Nile Delta. The programme aims to reduce pollution of the Nile and consequentially the Mediterranean Sea, contributing to SDG 14 “Life below water”. Furthermore, SDG5 “Gender Equality” is addressed by the strong citizen engagement efforts with a focus on gender equality within community committees.

Anna: The Kitchener Drain project contributes primarily to three SDGs, Goal 2 – Zero hunger, by increasing agricultural productivity and income, supporting sustainable food production, and increasing rural investment. Goal 6 – Clean water and sanitation, by increasing water-use efficiency and implementing integrated water resources management and Goal 9 - Industry, innovation, and infrastructure by developing quality, reliable, sustainable and resilient infrastructure and facilitating sustainable and resilient infrastructure development.

Magdy: It is a lifechanging opportunity, paradigm shifting experience, not only on the professional scale, but mostly on the personal scale. Please keep your eyes, ears, and mind open always (as per Anna`s advice).

Last year, Hanna Baan Hofman and Paul van Essen supported the Young Expert Programmes (YEP) Water, Agrofood & Renewable Energy. One of the things they have been working on is to develop a strategy to increase YEP applications for the Middle East and Northern Africa (MENA).

Last year, Hanna Baan Hofman and Paul van Essen supported the YEP Programme Bureau. Hanna did her internship at YEP as part of her studies International Land & Water Management at Wageningen UR. Paul is an alumnus of the YEP programme and is currently working as an independent consultant and coach. One of the tasks they have been working on is to develop a strategy to increase YEP applications for the Middle East and Northern Africa (MENA). Hanna: “It would be great to see the effect of this MENA strategy in a few years. When the YEP Programme Bureau can show a significant growth of the number of Young Experts building a sustainable future in the MENA region by the end of 2025!”.

Paul: “Since the start of YEP in 2013 the YEP Programme Bureau received many applications for positions of Young Experts in Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda, Indonesia and Ghana. However, since Phase II Indonesia, Ghana and also Rwanda are no longer focus countries. In order to diversify the countries of deployment of Young Experts it is important to have a closer look at the new focus countries, including those in the MENA region. In Phase I YEP could deploy Young Experts in 8 countries in the MENA region with only the Palestinian Territories and Yemen as focus countries. Since Phase II started in 2020, YEP can deploy Young Experts in 10 countries in the MENA region of which all are now focus countries.”

Hanna: “When reading the current policies of the Dutch government, but also of the European Union, we see a shift of focus towards the MENA region with an emphasis on youth employment. YEP is a great tool to support this and simultaneously contribute to the SDGs. There is a big young and highly educated population in the MENA region that wants to build a more sustainable future and find sustainable practices in the Water-Energy-Food nexus. Which is, obviously, a very urgent matter in the face of climate change.”

Paul: “It seems that especially the Agrofood and Renewable Energy sectors are booming in the MENA region. There is potentially a strong private sector collaboration in Algeria, Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco, Lebanon and Jordan. While the collaboration with development cooperation is likely to be more prominent in Yemen, Palestinian Territories, Libya and Iraq. For YEP Water we will put an extra focus on Egypt as a delta country. In addition, Morocco seems to have potential considering the large community in the Netherlands with Moroccan origin.”

Hanna: “Over the last few months we had several online meetings with the Dutch embassies, Private Sector Development (PSD) Coaches of RVO and with various potential organisations and companies. To contribute to the SDGs related to economic growth and inclusive societies, private sector development is promoted. SMEs that are rooted in the local communities are key to this development. Just as civil society organisations are key to integrating marginalised communities in the private sector development. Sector growth needs to be inclusive, especially in the sectors Water, Agrofood and Energy as they are fundamental to sustain livelihoods.”

Morocco ranked first in the "Country Brand Awards" for "general category", as it was learned from the organizers of this award.

Morocco surpassed Africa in this category by winning the gold award, ahead of South Africa (the silver award) and Egypt (the bronze award), according to the results that were published on the official page of this award, which covers several areas including attracting foreign investment, tourism promotion and managing the Coronavirus crisis. .

At the global level, according to the same source, New Zealand won the gold award in this category, followed by Singapore and South Korea.

The (Country Brand Awards) independently assesses three categories: "Tourism Promotion", "Doing Business" and "General Category".

In the category of "tourism promotion", Morocco ranked second in Africa after Kenya, while Egypt ranked third.

Always in Africa, Morocco ranked first with South Africa in the "Doing Business" category, ahead of Kenya and Senegal.

These categories include three basic elements in building a country brand, which is the ability to create an economic brand by attracting foreign investment, competencies and promoting exports; And the ability to create a tourist sign; As well as an exceptional new axis consistent with managing the (Covid-19) crisis. The final theme covers the management of the Coronavirus pandemic by countries, and takes into account key elements such as health security.

The jury, chaired by Gemma Lagay, and made up of communication professionals and diplomats, among them Fathallah Sijilmasi, the former Secretary General of the Union for the Mediterranean, which worked to assess these criteria, recognized the success of the award-winning countries in promoting their brand, both on the Continental (Africa, Europe, the Americas, Asia-Middle East, and Oceania) or at the global level.

According to newly published research, Morocco is ranked 5th in the world for clean innovation. The index is produced by MIT and published in “The Green Future Index” sponsored by Salesforce, Citrix, and Morgan Stanley.

The research was conducted through in-depth secondary research and analysis as well as interviews with global experts on climate change, green energy, and technologies that will drive decarbonisation.

It measures the degree to which 76 countries and territories are moving towards a green future by reducing their carbon emissions, developing clean energy, innovating in green sectors, and preserving their environment, as well as the degree to which governments are implementing effective climate policies.

The Clean Innovation Index reflects each country’s relative number of green patents, cross-border investment in clean energy, and private investment in foodtech.

Over a decade ago, the King of Morocco began a national debate about the future of energy, resulting in a fundamental policy redesign and a goal that renewables would produce 42% of the country’s power by 2020—a target that has now been raised to 52% by 2030.

In addition to developing strong wind and solar sectors, says

Said Mouline, CEO of the Morocco Agency for Energy Efficiency (AMEE), Morocco has also successfully driven down cost.

(Extract from the MIT Green Future Index Report 2021).

“At less than $0.03 per kilowatt hour, renewables are nowour cheapest way to produce electricity.” Fossil fuel subsidies have been eliminated and replaced with energy transition programs, for example to replace gas-fuelled farm irrigation with solar-powered pumps. Nearly 40,000 pumps have been installed to date. Another program provides solar conversion incentives for steel and cement producers and mining companies.

Mouline envisions Morocco becoming a regional climate advocate within Africa. “Today in Africa we have 600 million people who don’t have electricity, and we have the tools and capabilities to help leverage renewables to bridge that gap.” AMEE created a capacity-building centre in Marrakesh to train Africans from other countries in areas like renewable electrification and sustainable pumping for agriculture.

Morocco is also looking north to Europe. Some 60% of wind turbine blades produced in a new Moroccan factory will be for the export market, mainly to Europe. Decarbonisation will be essential to align with Europe’s New Green Deal, as well as capitalise on its opportunities. “Europe’s recovery plans will involve billions in hydrogen investment—we are now pushing to develop hydrogen resources, including storage technology and ammonia production to align with those aspirations. It is our new mission as an agency.”

Made in Morocco, towards a new beginning ...

We did it for masks and respirators, why not for tourism and industry? The pandemic is an opportunity or never to reduce dependence on imports, support local supply and make it the engine of sustainable post-coronavirus growth. In crafts, textiles, agrifood, automobile… There is no lack of opportunities and potential. Quality and innovation are the charm assets to win the loyalty of nationals, attract foreign markets and, why not, achieve our economic miracle.

After more than three months of an unprecedented health crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, Moroccan economic players are more than ever aware of the need to turn more to “Made in Morocco” in order to succeed first. a long-awaited recovery and also seize a golden opportunity that arises in terms of exports during the post-coronavirus.

We can no longer speak of a new concept, but rather of a conviction that continues to gain momentum to promote the Moroccan product at national and international scales capable of doubly weighing on the trade balance.

An increase in “Made in Morocco” will indeed allow a significant reduction in imports and an increase in exports, which will logically guarantee a reduction in the trade deficit and an improvement in Morocco's stock of foreign currency reserves.

Consequently, the development of a 100% Moroccan production thus depends both on the domestic market and on exports.

            Masks, gowns, respirators… What next?

This period of health crisis, which was a severe test for the whole world, clearly demonstrated the importance of this “Made in Morocco”. Moreover, the experience was a great success with the production of 100% Moroccan respirators and protective masks against Covid-19.

Better still, this production of masks satisfied a growing domestic demand, making it possible to achieve national self-sufficiency in this area, before moving towards export. A successful bet since a total of 18.5 million units of protective masks were exported by 69 companies to 11 countries spread over four continents during the period from May 21 to June 08.

According to the Ministry of Industry, the export of these masks concerned several countries such as France with a share of 33.6%, Portugal (28.5%) and Spain (14.6%) . This means that the Kingdom is on the right track to further strengthen its position as a world leader in various fields, particularly in terms of medical equipment.

            to “re” conquer local consumers

In addition to the export component, “Made in Morocco” also seems to be a better way to revive the national economy and give Moroccan companies a breath of fresh air. Still more efforts are needed to promote “local consumption” and encourage Moroccans to buy local products.

This is to give this national added value a chance to shine, particularly during the post-coronavirus period when the Moroccan economic fabric will be on the lookout for the slightest opportunity to get off to a good start. For example, national tourism, a sector affected by the harmful fallout from this pandemic including the closure of borders, relies mainly on domestic demand to try to save a year that promises to be already catastrophic.

In its overall proposal for the economic recovery plan, the General Confederation of Moroccan Businesses considers the promotion of “Made in Morocco” among the main levers to be operated in order to cope with the demand shock generated by the health crisis. It is thus a question of capitalizing on the image of Morocco and of encouraging local consumption. The employers also advocated the creation and encouragement of a “Made in Morocco” label aimed at facilitating the recognition and promotion of Moroccan products with strong local content, facilitating their identification. Crafts, tourism, textiles, agrifood, industry, culture etc. So many sectors and areas where the Moroccan product should be valued through public-private media communication and the development of a label symbolizing quality, respect for consumers and the environment.
